About
This series of artefacts speculate on the role of digital fabrication on traditional basketry techniques while utilizing low-carbon earth materials and natural fibres. Employing digital fabrication to reimagine ancient materials, we seek to reconnect constructed forms and to inspire a profound remembrance of our connection to the soil, as the essential stewardship required for our survival. The Natural Materials Lab at Columbia University, founded and directed by Prof. Lola Ben-Alon, investigates raw, earth- and fibre-based materials, their fabrication techniques, and design possibilities, by converging material science, geology, geography, architecture, engineering, art, craft and design.
