Chris has been crafting pots for over twenty-five years. He embarked on this journey in late 1995 as Edmund de Waal’s inaugural apprentice, spending two years honing his skills alongside him. Since 1998, Chris has operated his own studio, where he has collaborated with Brazilian potter Carina Ciscato for the past two decades.
His artistic process revolves around wheel throwing and turning, predominantly using Limoges porcelain as his clay of choice. While his primary glazes consist of tenmoku and celadon, he has recently introduced red and green glazes into his repertoire. Despite this relatively limited palette, Chris continuously discovers innovative ways to blend and utilise them. His creations undergo reduction firing in his gas kiln.
Chris’s creations are designed for both utility and adornment within interior spaces. From mugs and cups to teapots and lidded pots, his repertoire encompasses a variety of functional pieces. Occasionally, he delves into what he terms “extra-curricular” work—collections of ceramic forms that prioritise aesthetics over practicality, often incorporating interactive elements. Lately, Chris has been captivated by a series of pots known as vistas or “scapes,” which convey visual narratives across the ensemble.
His artwork enjoys widespread recognition and is showcased in exhibitions across the UK and internationally. Several prestigious museums house his pieces in their permanent collections, including the V&A, the Ashmolean, and the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art in Japan. Chris has also undertaken residencies in both the UK and Japan, and since 2011, he has shared his expertise through teaching endeavours at home and abroad.
