‘Chinese Design: Harmony in Diversity’ showcases traditional Chinese crafts alongside innovative modern designs. The exhibition presents two important Chinese principles of ‘harmony’ and ‘elegance’, with themes including ‘Harmony of Textiles’ and ‘Elegance of Porcelain’, exploring the coexistence between humans and nature and expressing the essence of Chinese culture.
About
Art and Design Magazine presents “Chinese Design: Harmony in Diversity” at the China Pavilion during the tenth anniversary of London Craft Week. The exhibition features twenty sets of clothing and jewelry – originated from Han, Miao and Yi ethnic groups, twenty works of ceramics – crafted in both official kilns of Longquan celadon and civilian kilns of Jingdezhen porcelain – alongside twenty sets of lacquerware, bringing the audience a fresh and comprehensive look into the history and future of Chinese craftsmanship.
Characterised by a tactile chaîne operatoire where materials are shaped as thoughts arise and morphed at hands’ touch, Chinese craftsmanship holds a unique place in the world history of material culture. As form blends seamlessly with function, utility is unified harmoniously with beauty.
Throughout the week the exhibition will host three themed activities on ceramics, fabrics and capacity building, sharing with guests both the making process behind and social impact of these fascinating crafts.
In addition to the exhibition itself, we warmly invite our audience to attend the opening ceremony where guests will have the opportunity to enjoy traditional Chinese tea as well as performances of classical and folk dances by local artists.
