About
William De Morgan was a contemporary of William Morris and is celebrated as the leading ceramist of the English Arts and Crafts movement. De Morgan depicted many animal species and plants, and these are represented in this limited design collection.
The De Morgan Foundation and byLegacy® celebrates the launch of their partnership at London Craft Week 2024 at this one-day event. View a collection of luxury items including 100% silks, 14-karat gold jewellery, home fragrances and artisan accessories inspired by the artworks of William De Morgan are featured against his artworks.
The vibrant colours and materials used in this licensed range captures the essence of De Morgan’s revival of the ancient art of lustre glazing. This innovation produced an iridescent metallic sheen to his ceramic surfaces, thereby adding glitz to the smog of Victorian London. Meanwhile, his plants and flowers became more fantastical and imaginative as De Morgan’s style became more developed.
With each design rooted in nature, each piece tells a story. You are warmly invited to come and explore these further, to buy from the retail collection and to enjoy two talks given by the partnership directors.
Talk 11am-12pm: Sarah Hardy, Director of the De Morgan Museum will discuss how De Morgan reinvented the lost art of lustre glazing, showing examples of his beautiful ‘ruby lustre’ tiles and vases from the De Morgan Collection. This is a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with these wonderful art objects.
Talk 1pm- 2pm: De Morgan’s Depiction of Nature in 21st century Sustainable Production: A Talk with Annika Bosanquet, Creative Director of byLegacy®, spotlighting a few of his Victorian Flora and Fauna representations and the production challenges he overcame in 1890-1900 compared to today
