Choi’s work goes against the refinement and functionality of the Korean ceramic tradition. She recreates traditional forms but with an unconventional twist. Choi’s Blue Moon Jars are like traditional Moon Jars in form – they are round pots that measure 40cm in diameter, but they have been hand built with small, cloud-like clay patches. The artist has then applied delicate line and pattern drawings to the surface, connecting one ‘patch’ to another. Her ceramics are left unglazed to remove functionality and to reveal the raw textures that lie beneath the endless blue lines.
