About
Clare first studied ceramics on an art foundation course in Braintree, after which she gained her BA(hons) in Ceramics at Bristol University . This is where she began experimenting with her technique to try to reproduce the peeling walls and sun-faded colours of Venice. Clare has since exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad.
In her work she captures the poignant beauty and drama of weathering and corrosion – the point of balance between existence and decay. Finding the vessel form the most satisfying to use and enjoying the traditional method of wheel-throwing, Clare finds this adds to the sense of capturing time. For many years she has experimented with methods of colour application to the surface of her pots. Clare uses vitreous slips, which she mixes and intermix from raw materials with primary colour glaze stains; in this way she can achieve an infinite palette of subtle colours, which is applied to the exterior surface in layers whilst the pot is still damp. The expressive, apparent randomness of the design belies the laborious and careful method necessary to achieve it.
