David Stonehouse is a Cambridge-based artist-maker. After gaining a degree in Silversmithing & Jewellery, he was studio assistant to RCA Professor David Watkins before completed an MA in Product Design at Central Saint Martin’s. He worked in international design before returning to his craft roots to make refined objects.
David’s practice is informed by the inherent beauty of materials and a sense of place, and defined by an evolving personal aesthetic rooted in artisanal craftsmanship. His pieces are the product of an ongoing exploration of the relationship between form, surface and function, in which he looks to balance simplicity, refinement and meaning. His process is to scale back and let each element and material speak, to create objects that draw the user in to look closer and savour a given moment. His Shoreline series of hand-thrown stoneware is inspired by pebbles found on walks along the Suffolk and Pembrokeshire coasts. The inlaid coloured clay lines directly reference the veins of tthese stones, while also alluding to the waves, tide marks and landforms of the foreshore.
