Jaixia Blue is a storyteller across multiple mediums, ranging from textile art to music and poetry. She was born in West London and completed her BA (Hons) in Textiles and Business Studies at the University of Brighton. Here she formed the basis of her debut collection Jigsaw Heritage which explores the artist’s dual British and Caribbean heritage, as well as the unique life experience of her grandmother and her journey from Jamaica to London, UK toward the end of the Windrush period. These poetic artworks are characterized by a lively combination of colour, which seek to uplift the spirit.
As well as a delicate, yet eclectic use of pattern and texture, which speaks to the celebration of a courageous journey undertaken by Windrush passengers, and the exciting intermingling of culture between the two islands. In her work, the exploitation of light and dark takes the shape of puzzle pieces, a running motif throughout the collection; emblematic of piecing together the designer’s family history, or herstory. Also, reflective of the misplaced memories of the artist’s grandmother, who is currently battling Parkinson’s and Dementia. Solo exhibitions include Pitzhanger Gallery (2022) SET London (2022) and Gunnersbury Park Museum (2023-2024). Her work now sits delicately between textile art, sound, film, and fashion. Working with natural and deadstock materials where possible. The artist states: I think the most important thing for anyone is to feel seen and heard, and I want to empower myself and others to see themselves through the stories I express with my art.
