Karl identifies himself as a maker and craftsman, driven by a quest for understanding through systematic processes of material manipulation. Central to his practice is the act of labor and the simplicity of repetition, serving as the foundation for a dialogue between himself and the objects he creates. His series, ‘A homage to Nonna’s house,’ emerges as an imaginative and nostalgic tribute to the aesthetics of his grandparents’ home and the memories woven into its fabric. This familial abode served as the genesis of Karl’s artistic journey, igniting his passion for crafting and cultivating an appreciation for the beauty of carefully curated objects within a domestic space.
Designed by Nonna and Nonno, the house boasted mid-century furniture, ceramics, and artworks, including sculptures and silver jewellery crafted by his grandfather, Nonno. It was a haven of curiosity, teeming with tactile objects and childhood delights, fostering an environment ripe for exploration and play.
Through his work, Karl embarks on a personal exploration of materials and techniques, merging his inspirations, craftsmanship, and familial influences into a singular expression. Each piece serves as a testament to the essence of Nonna’s house, a memory preserved only in the recollections of those who experienced its charm.
