Internationally celebrated wood carver Norhaiza Noordin began wood carving in 1984, when he was guided by the mentors in his hometown of Kampung Baru in Besut, Terengganu. During this time, he was exposed to the extraordinary wood carving techniques of the Malay tradition.
For his contribution to the craft of wood carving, in 2022 Norhaiza was recognised as a National Craft Legend in Wood Carving, the most prestigious award in crafts at a national level.
His wood carving skills come in the form of decorative wood panels, or the handles of the traditional malay dagger, known as the “keris”. Norhaiza’s work has been celebrated for its individual character that is born from re-applying the techniques of the masters who have come before him.
Over the past 40 years, Norhaiza has sought to master this knowledge to pass down to the next generation. This mission has also encouraged him to find new ways of fusing tradition with modernity, which has enhanced his work. His pieces are known for preserving the traditional Malay aesthetic with the finest craftsmanship.
Amongst his many accolades, Norhaiza was commissioned to carve a decorate wood panel in the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford in 2006. He is heralded in Malaysia as one of the nation’s living master craftsmen.
Norhaiza’s skill in wood carving has also led to his exploration of the ancient Malay tradition of textile gilding, which is the application of gold leaf on fabric using arabic gum. His wood carving will be on display at the Malaysia Pavilion, and he will be demonstrating the craft of textile gilding.
